Shooting Stars form The Breakfast Club

Shooting Stars’ Halls Creek site has established a ‘Breakfast Club’ to help insure its participants not only attend school, but start the day off with a proper meal.

Shooting Stars is an initiative of Netball WA and Glass Jar Australia and uses netball as the vehicle to encourage greater engagement and attendance at school of young Aboriginal girls living in WA’s remote communities and regional towns.

Each morning during Term Four the Halls Creek site provides a healthy breakfast for its participants allowing them to stay switched on in the classroom.

Shooting Stars Kimberley Manager Helen Ockerby said the ‘Breakfast Club’ was another way to encourage young Aboriginal girls to attend school and have the best chance to embrace their potential in the classroom.

“It’s important to keep our relationships strong and know how each individual is feeling at the start of the day,” Ockerby said.

“We can often support participants better when we understand the journey someone has taken to come to school.”

“Our breakfast program serves anywhere between 8-15 individuals and we often share with some family members.”

Shooting Stars Executive Officer Fran Haintz said the Halls Creek Breakfast Club was another instance of the team going above and beyond for its participants.

“The fact our site Coordinators and volunteers share their time to make it as easy as possible for our participants to get a ride to school along with breakfast has been a massive success in getting our girls to school,” Haintz said.

“Breakfast may seem like a simple requirement, but the fact our team at Halls Creek make the effort each day has seen an improvement in helping to encourage our girls to come to school.”

Halls Creek is one of eight Shooting Stars sites across Western Australia, with the program aspiring to work with 20 schools by the end of 2021.
