At-risk youth will benefit from the opening of the latest round of Youth Engagement Scheme funding through programs which will help them connect with their community.
Applications are now open for the latest round of the Youth Engagement Scheme offered through Sport and Recreation, a division of the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries.
In this round $250,000 is available for projects delivered by l
“Local governments and not-for-profit organisations. The projects use sport and active recreation-based pursuits to target disengaged youth aged eight to 18 years old who live in lower socio-economic areas in metropolitan Perth and regional Western Australia.
Programs will be delivered in safe environments, with experienced mentors and leaders, and offer volunteer and leadership opportunities to increase capability, build resilience and sustainability.
Entries close on October 16, 2017. It is anticipated successful projects will start in early 2018.
Sport and Recreation Minister Mick Murray said:
“One of the powers of sport and recreation is that it does have the ability to teach people life-long lessons which they can use off the field.
“The Youth Engagement Scheme is a great way for young people to connect with their community and for a community to connect with its young people.
“Past Youth Engagement Scheme programs have done a great job of joining the two and because these projects can be delivered in metropolitan Perth and regional areas, more young people are able to benefit.”
Youth Minister Peter Tinley said:
“As a dad of four, I am acutely aware of how sport teaches young people to sacrifice their own ambition for the collective goals of the team.
“I recognise how sport gets young people active, which is good for their physical health, and also how sport develops emotional and social resilience as well as self-esteem and confidence – important life skills for all young people.”
